London, E.C. 10th June, 1915.
Dear Sirs,
We were surprised this morning to receive from you a
communication in which you state that you have always understood
our firm to be a German one, and the untoward nature of your remark would be the more offensive if we did not notice that your letter is signed by a clerk and not by a principal.
This is a British Limited Company with two directors, both British subjecte. We have been for many years on the War
Office and Admiralty lists and since the outbreak of the war we
have done business to the extent of several thousands of pounde with these and other Government Departments, the French and Belgim Sections of the Commission Internationale de Ravitaillement and the South African Aviation Corps.
In March last the Admiralty authorised the payment to
our Company of 2 11,300 as compensation for loss of commission on
the sale of the three Brazilian monitors which we had negotiated for Roumania, but they were taken over by the Royal Navy.
One of our staff has already been severely wounded at the Front, two are awaiting orders to go over, four who for one reason or another are unable to enlist, are in the volunteers and the only unmarried man of military age in our employ who is not serving in one capacity or another, has been twice refused by the recruiting officer. We are lending the head of our Sarco Depart- ment in Manchester to assist in the manufacture of munitions of war
